Our Flickering Faith in Life

EVERY DAY, we flicker in and out of faith-in-life. Our fleeting, subliminal micro-depressions: as natural as breathing.

Think of it. Every waking hour of every human life, riddled with unacknowledged chivalry. The soul– silenced for a second by the siren song of orphaned ego– breaks free; refusing, over and over, to stop singing through flesh and bone.

Then something happens. Our flickering faith-in-life slows to a crawl and we find ourselves marooned in a dark valley between two Himalayan “yeses to life”. Saturn or Pluto forms a hard angle to a personal planet for 1-3 years, forcing us to pay homage to loss.

Relationships wither. Life purposes turn to dust, and our inner posture– once manically erect– assumes the shape of prostration. Foreshadowing the fate of every ego– our Aries head falls to our Pisces feet.

It takes time, but with a bit of soul-seeing support, we make meaning out of our suffering. The sting of pointless pain turns into humble submission to an intelligent, soul-evolving curriculum.

Gradually, as the accumulation of days builds a buffer between us and the weight of our past, our extended visit to this once glossed-over valley comes to an end. Our peak-chasing attempts at happiness, now fully and forever foiled, the “One who wheels the heavens” guides us home to the fullness of being: the seamless field of sentience that the flickering was happening in.

Welcome to human life in a nutshell. Not a glorious ascent into enlightenment, but a disciplined, day-to-day witnessing of ego’s “anxiety disguised as excitement” and a grateful return to the seat we never left: the merciful witness staring steady through our eyes.
