When Gravity is a God: The Tough Love Teachings of Saturn in Pisces

On September 1st, the Lord of Time (Saturn) dips his toes, once again, into the sensitive sign of Pisces for 5 1/2 months. A striking shift in the quality of time. 

One thing’s for sure: this isn’t a time for flaccid wonder. Saturn in Pisces is tough and uncompromising. Picture the stern, chiseled face of Clint Eastwood, growling, “Spirituality is a mind game until God is gravity.”  

That’s right: Gravity is a wildly unappreciated, life-affirming god.

Just ask the astronauts, who experience 1–2% bone loss per month in outer space. The loss of Saturn’s grave-ward tug causes muscles to atrophy, compromises the cardiovascular system, suppresses the immune system and depressurizes the brain, causing visual and neurological impairments. In short, heaviness is healthiness. 

Gravity presses us into a dynamic world of soul-mirrors without which we would have no means of karmic feedback and no stage set for the practice of ego-incandescence. 

With gravity, of course, comes gravitas: the ponderous countdown to death and the unbridgeable chasm between “self and other.” Notice the generosity of time and space: how perfectly it dramatizes the dystopian landscape of orphaned ego so we can sense, with mounting urgency, the need to “bridge the gap” with meditative relating and invite others to take refuge with us, in Deathless Being.

Gravity (and gravitas) are Saturn’s way of prodding us to inquire: Is timeless presence warmly okay with the illusion of separation? Is the secret weeping of our soul spawning effective interventions that break the trance of mind-on-a-countdown? Is our hurtable human face turning into a soul-mirror for others? Or has personhood “gone rogue–” lost in the role play of the archetype slave?

The great thing about gravity is its omnipresence. There is never a moment when this invisible “ally in awakening” isn’t tugging on our sleeve. Why call it a god? Because only an otherworldly master could combine bone-building weightiness with ethereal intervention.
