ORPHANED EGO reacts with identity-hardening belief and opinion. Why? Because me-story is all its got. Space-with-a-face, on the other hand, uses language as a catalyst for self-inquiry, playfully teasing and testing, “What wordplay shines the most wise-loving light through the lampshade of personality?”
Teachers are those who “wonder aloud,” accurately identifying the most illuminating, alive question arising in the field; dancing in and out of time to find the role play that sparks the most visceral experience of One Being.
It is the joy and purpose of all souls to tune into the language of inter-Being and decode its hidden dharma. To see, buried in the chemistry of everyday discourse, a co-arising area of inquiry (what David Whyte calls, “our frontier conversation”) that yearns to be noticed, named and meditatively excavated.
What happens when we set aside the conventions of everyday speech to surf the subtle waves of self-inquiry curling and crashing between us?
In short, meditative relating: two souls surrendered to the dictates of a mysterious, yet entirely palpable, shepherding Presence. The right use of two.
What, then, do we “say” with our eyes?
The Tibetans call it “pure view.” This is where we conscientiously cleanse ourselves of archetypal bias and strengthen our ability to perceive the soul’s divine intent. (The essence of the Styles of Awakening Training).
Remember, all beings are psychic. They can tell who we’re beholding: their fading visage or eternity-with-eyes.
Why are they reacting negatively to our well-meaning words? Here’s four possibilities:
- Because we’re draping their deathless Being (and, therefore, our own) in a web of claustrophobic countdown concerns.
- Because our attempt to bridge the imaginary gap between us is, inadvertently, making it more real.
- Because we’re approaching them as a problem-solver instead of a presence-savorer.
- Because we resent them for evoking our Self-betrayal: the ways we settle for miserably secure, time-bound conversation when we could have mysterious, enlivening self-inquiry.
