Veracity to Virus: The four astrological stages of truth-seeking

moonwalkerIN THE YOUTH OF MIND, the world brims with opportunities to orient and confirm the separate sense of self through an ever-widening range of experience-gathering and mental categorization (Gemini). Over time, however, our hard-earned patchwork of self-discovered truths are subsumed by larger themes, impersonal principles and archetypes (Sagittarius). Eventually, even these overarching, paradigmatic patterns are felt as epi-phenomenon of an even larger, all-encompassing consciousness that is unfolding and evolving through us (Pisces). In this way, the bread crumbs of truth that once made us hungry for life now lead us, irrevocably, into the ego-dissolving cloud of unknowing. Finally, in the maturity of the meditative mind, when we have learned to intuitively navigate and relax in this fog of inter-being, we spontaneously manifest our most pragmatic Virgo service: the ability to shepherd others into revelations known only through embodied emptiness.

There. now you know the astrologically ordained trajectory of all human learning. Drape whatever life dramas you wish on this skeleton of seeking, just don’t forget that each act in the play is a mere backdrop against which to practice a priceless integration: the humbling, moment-to-moment navigation of our individual ego with a swooning, heartfelt embrace of the larger presence it is showing up in. Why make the journey from Gemini to Sagittarius to Pisces to Virgo? So you can spread, like a psychic contagion, the “wave in love with ocean” virus.

Stop for a moment and consider how inevitable this archetypal progression is. How could we not move along this track from fact-finding to repeating themes to paradigms to felt presence to non-conceptual realization, to subtly inducting others into this realization? Yes, we could plateau at any point, but isn’t that just going numb to what life wants to happen? Forget about belief vs. non-belief, vs. mysticism vs. scientific materialism. What if spirituality is simply moving willingly through these natural developmental seasons?

Notice how each of these stages is equally important on the path to nondual realization. Pattern-synthesizing Sagittarius is crippled without previous Gemini knowledge-gathering. Kama yoga Virgo is merely “a busy do-gooder” without the otherworldly grace of Pisces.

Next, notice that these four stages are not always sequential. A 21-year-old seeker can catapult into the mystical union of Pisces for years, only to “backslide” into “experience junkie” Gemini so as to bring a more nuanced awareness and compassion to their own (and others) distracted mental habits.

Consider the disorienting implications of this archetypally equalized worldview. Seen through astro-literate eyes, an outward display of hurtful insensitivity could well be a conscientious descent into the visceral lessons of regret, allowing for a deeper empathy and impact in later life (or in future lives). An extraordinarily wise and loving person may, in fact, be insulating themselves from the messiness of a genuine karmic calling. In this sense, their clarity is fragile, untested and condition-based.

In whom is the One Being most awake to itself? Perhaps in the one who inspires us to finally face and feel the uneasy sense of separation that fuels such a question. Perhaps in the one who helps us notice, on-the-spot, the existential orphanedness and anxiety pushing us to grasp for orientation through exactly this kind of Oneness-chopping categorization.

Astro-Self-Inquiry Questions

1) Which of these four stages are you most frequently stalled at? (Gemini – Sagittarius – Pisces – Virgo)

2) Who embodies for you the next stage and what excuse do you use to shield yourself from their inductive presence?

3) What kind of community mirrors you accurately enough to help you witness (and emotionally reckon with) how your particular mind tramples timeless presence?
